Protein peanut butter or a plain one?

The Pulse Protein jar holds 82.5% roasted peanuts, 12% pea protein and 5.5% virgin rapeseed oil, which puts the protein content at 32%. Kazidomi peanut butters contain peanut and nothing else. The first is denser in protein, the second simpler in composition.

What is the texture like?

Thicker than a standard peanut butter: the pea protein soaks up part of the oil and firms the paste. The virgin rapeseed oil in the Pulse Protein jar makes up for some of that. Take the jar out of the cupboard a while before use and stir it well, and it spreads without tearing bread.

Is there added sugar in this jar?

No. The ingredients list on the Pulse Protein jar runs to roasted peanuts, pea protein and virgin rapeseed oil, all from organic farming. No added sugar, no palm oil, no sweetener. The taste stays firmly peanut, with a slightly drier finish than a butter made of fruit alone.

How do I use it day to day?

On wholemeal bread at breakfast, in porridge, stirred into a yoghurt or worked into a pancake batter. Pulse Protein peanut butter also thins into a smoothie, which it thickens noticeably. One or two tablespoons is the usual amount depending on the preparation; beyond that the texture turns claggy.

How should I store it and which allergens apply?

A cool, dry cupboard, lid closed properly, away from the light. The Pulse Protein product contains peanut and must be avoided by anyone allergic to it. Made in the Netherlands, it keeps at room temperature; the fridge hardens an already thick paste and makes spreading on toast a struggle.
