Baking Soda

Bicarbonate or percarbonate of soda — what is the difference?

Two distinct products. Kazidomi bicarbonate is pure sodium hydrogen carbonate, mild, and it cleans, deodorises and can be used in cooking. Percarbonate releases active oxygen in hot water and is meant for lifting stains and whitening laundry. The first is general purpose, the second stays with the washing.

What is bicarbonate used for around the house?

For cleaning and deodorising: sprinkled onto a damp sponge for a sink or a hob, dissolved in hot water for a worktop, left in a small dish in the fridge, or scattered on a rug before vacuuming. Kazidomi bicarbonate also goes into homemade household cleaning recipes.

Can I use it in cooking?

Yes, it is 100% sodium hydrogen carbonate. It raises a batter when it meets an acid such as lemon juice or yoghurt, softens pulses as they cook and brightens the colour of green vegetables. A pinch is enough: in excess, Kazidomi bicarbonate leaves a soapy taste behind.

How should I store the pack?

Dry and firmly closed. Kazidomi bicarbonate takes up moisture from the air and sets into hard blocks if it is left open in a damp room such as a bathroom. Decant the 1000 g pack into an airtight jar. A block that has already formed crumbles with a fork and still works.

Which surfaces should I avoid?

Aluminium, marble, polished hobs and non-stick coatings: the powder stays abrasive even when finely milled, and can dull or scratch these surfaces over time. Always test Kazidomi bicarbonate on an area that barely shows, rub without pressing, and rinse with clean water once the sponge has been over it.
