Barbecue-style tofu skewers

This barbecue-style grilled tofu is a true explosion of umami flavors! With a clever cut and an intense sauce, each bite is crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and incredibly delicious. Perfect for summer barbecues, veggie meals, or a quick and original dinner.
Ingredients
Tofu and Marinade
- 1 block of extra-firm tofu, drained, dried, and pressed
- Neutral cooking oil (sunflower, grapeseed, etc.)
- Salt & pepper to taste
- ¼ cup maple syrup or yacon syrup
- 6 tablespoons tamari sauce
- 4 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 heaping tablespoon oyster sauce
- 1 heaping tablespoon fresh grated garlic
- 1 heaping tablespoon fresh grated ginger
For Serving
- Cooked rice (basmati, jasmine, whole grain...)
- Sliced green onions (scallions)
- Fresh coriander
- Sesame seeds
Recipe
Preparing the "accordion" tofu cut
- Slice the block of tofu lengthwise into a thick slice, about 2.5 cm thick.
- Place two chopsticks or straws on each side of the slice (they will act as a guide).
- Cut diagonally every 0.5 cm, but don't cut all the way through, using the chopsticks as a guide.
- Flip the tofu slice and make straight cuts every 0.5 cm.
- You’ll end up with a tofu "accordion" that will absorb the marinade well.
- Insert 2 to 4 wooden skewers to stabilize each piece.
Making the Marinade
In a bowl, mix the maple syrup, soy sauce, rice vinegar, oyster sauce, garlic, and ginger. Whisk well to make a smooth sauce.
Cooking
- Heat a cast-iron skillet or griddle pan on medium-high heat for 2-3 minutes.
- Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of neutral oil.
- Place the tofu skewers in the pan and grill for 3-4 minutes.
- Flip the skewers, then pour half of the marinade directly onto the tofu.
- Grill for another 3-4 minutes to caramelize the edges.
- Repeat the process by adding more sauce until you get a beautiful golden and crispy color.
Plating
Serve the tofu skewers hot on a bed of rice, carefully remove the skewers, and add your toppings: fresh chili, green onions, coriander, and sesame seeds.
